A data-centric approach to Life Science
Life science research is increasingly becoming not only technology-driven, but also data-driven. SciLifeLab coordinates and supports activities throughout the life cycle of data, from project planning, data production, data analysis, data sharing, to publishing and reuse of data, where researchers are dependent on advanced data analysis and e-infrastructures.
SciLifeLab Data Centre is a central unit within SciLifeLab with responsibility for IT- and data management issues, serving the SciLifeLab and the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research program.
At SciLifeLab, we see data as one of the most valuable and long-lasting products of our operations and strive to make our data FAIR, handled according to open science standards and that its long- term value to the scientific community is maximized.
Scientific Data Platform
The SciLifeLab Data Platform is a new technical hosting environment for data-centric tools, databases, and support for data-driven life science. The website will function as a hub for the life science community. The platform, funded by the SciLifeLab & Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), will serve all life science researchers and data-producing facilities in Sweden.
IT and Software Services
The SciLifeLab Data Centre provides services for IT and data management. We also work to facilitate the communication between SciLifeLab platforms, their users, and the research community, and develop databases and tools. The purpose is to maximize the scientific impact of SciLifeLab generated data and provide a good helpful IT environment for the SciLifeLab platforms and their users.
IT and Software Services
We have a number of services available, and some things are in development.
Systems for operations
A web based system for unit communication with prospective users. We can provide you with an instance configured according to your own specific requirements. Try out a demo instance at orderportal.scilifelab.se, contact us or Per Kraulis directly.
The Data Centre built and maintains the SciLifeLab Publications database where the results of research assisted by SciLifeLab units can be found. A second database was set up for publications of researchers and fellows affiliated with SciLifeLab.
DATA MANAGEMENT PLANS
We encourage SciLifeLab units to support users with data management plans. We provide templates and a software system to manage such plans, the SciLifeLab instance of the Data Stewardship Wizard.
FACILITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
A unit management system (scheduling, invoicing, pricing, operational management etc) has procured by KI and UU, Agilent Technologies iLab Operations Software was awarded the contract. The implementation process is ongoing at KI and UU.
The online survey tool Typeform is offered to the units and administration. It allows to collect questionnaire responses from users/researchers. Email us for access.
DATA DELIVERY SYSTEM
The Data Delivery System (DDS) is a cloud-based system for the delivery of data from SciLifeLab platforms to their users.
The Data Centre can provide hosting of some services and data for units, and in specific cases also for research groups. SciLifeLab Serve is a service for publishing apps and serving machine learning models.
SUPPORT FOR DATA PUBLISHING
The Data Centre provides support for the SciLifeLab and DDLS community for data publishing through brokering services. We assist the submission of data that spans from genomics, proteomics, microscopy, chemical biology, and several other areas to public repositories. For more information or to request brokering services please contact email@example.com.
The Data Centre provides access to Anubis, a proposal submission and review handling system. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for inquiries.
Collaboration and communication systems
Confluence is a tool for team collaboration. It can be used to share and edit documents, manage tasks and project plans, and much else. Visit our Confluence guide for a quick overview of the system and how to get started.
For sharing files we provide you with a Nextcloud solution, all granted projects will be able to use this Dropbox style file sharing option for their files and data. See Nextcloud user guide. Log in using your scilifelab.se email or contact email@example.com to get an account.
A cloud based system for project planning and storing documents, made available through agreement with UU, and approved also for storage of non-sensitive personal data.
Slack is an online lightweight communication tool. Anyone with an email address that ends in scilifelab.se, scilifelab.uu.se, bils.se or nbis.se can immediately register themselves in the SciLifeLab Slack workspace. Anyone else: request an invite by emailing the Data Centre.
The SciLifeLab Forum is good for more substantial, permanent reference information that is still easy to update. It is a public Discourse instance. Sign up using the blue Sign Up button at the top. See Guide to getting started.
Email management for scilifelab.se is handled by SciLifeLab Data Centre. Direct requests to firstname.lastname@example.org and include information about:
- reasons why you need the email address
- current email
Service request form
As a way of documenting and tracking your IT/data management needs we have a Service Request Form to be used. Please email this to email@example.com:
SciLifeLab Data Policy
The first version of the SciLifeLab Data Policy has been released. This document will be revised and updated regularly.
